It’s Not As Cold As You’d Think

October 31st, 2009

Inspired by some folks up in Homer, I decided to head out onto the water for one last Alaska water session before daylight savings switched over and the snow begins to fly. I was a little concerned about the cold since this is the latest in the year that I have been on the water in Alaska, but I need not have been concerned. Since I only submerged myself once or twice, most of the time I was high and dry.
I wore a 4/3mm wetsuit with booties and gloves. I had a hood under my helmet and a life vest. The air temps were in the high 30’s. I was actually quite toasty and won’t shy away from going out in these temps again. That being said, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who is learning and thus is spending a lot of time in the water (as opposed to on top of it). The next time I kite in Alaska, it’ll probably be on snow. Stay tuned and happy Halloween.
