In the week of new year we had awesome clear skies, steady winds, and great running conditions on the Chilkat River. Steve was out doing moonlight sessions 4 nights in a row and each night he was able to lure one more kiter away from his cozy fire to get out onto the river. None of us regretted it!
The night I went out was the day after the new year’s blue moon and was really magical. The only low point was a run-in with a skeptical police officer who pulled me over thinking I was a youth heading out to party in some remote location. He gave me a very close look when I told him I was going kiting!
Once out of his clutches and out on the river, it was so bright I could read my wind meter without a flashlight! I got set up and went cruising and I soon noticed I was being followed by a moon shadow. In the distance I could see the other kiters silently ghosting around on the flats. Up higher the snow capped peaks were glowing white in the starry sky.
