Spring!!! In February

February 17th, 2010

What a bummer this winter is turning out to be….at least around sea level in Haines.

With temps sitting in the 30s and even the 40s since the last week of January, the river is flowing again, the pussy willows are blossoming and all our kiting spots around town are shot. I am toying with the idea of hitting the water soon if this persists! In fact, yesterday afternoon saw a nice southerly of about 20 MPH and air temps around 40 degrees F – well within the normal comfort range of kiting on the water. I just needed to get over the mental block of having to wade through snow drifts to get to the beach.

Local kiters have been enjoying some good action up on the pass and I intend to join them this weekend, while hoping that we get another little cold snap this winter to enjoy some of the great kiting spots on the Chilkat River.
