With the latest cool weather and snowfall, the river spots around Haines are now all up and running and the Haines Summit pass has had great conditions for the past few weeks. Let everyone know about your spots.

Beluga Lake in Homer is on. I was out there today for about 5 hours. There were at least 3 other snow kiters out there as well. Started out with my 3.5ft long ice skates, but halfway through I switched to skis. The snow is finally deep enough to get an edge on skis & the winds been good as well. Started out on my 16m, but the wind picked up to the point where it was getting scary so I switched to my 12. The other guys out there were on 5m-7m foils, skis & snowboards. So when's this year's Thompson Pass festival gonna be?

Around Haines, we just had about 3 feet of fresh powder on top of a nice hard 6 inch base. We'd had a regular group of kiters out on the river and up on the pass whenever the wind is blowing. The only drawback is that all the new snow has made it difficult to park in our favorite places! The crew is mainly flying Ozone Mantas these days, but we have some Best and HQ kites mixing it up, too! Now that the days are growing longer, we are getting more chances to play!

This tropical weather has destroyed all the kiting around sea level in Haines. We are starting our spring-skiing season up on the pass. Fortunately, there is tons of great powder up there!

Unless something remarkable happens, any further snowkiting in Southeast Alaska this season is going to be up high...on the passes and icefields. I hit the water today, officially opening the local water season for 2010. Trace and Ben up in Homer were way ahead of me as they went out last week for a good session at the Spit.
Despite today's dip in the ocean, I haven't hung up the snowboard yet...still have at least another 6 weeks of good kiting in the mountains!
